Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend A.Badalova / The construction of a nuclear power station (NPS) in Azerbaijan may cost $2-3bln, Dmitriy Skryabin, an energy analyst from the Russian investment company ATON, said on 28 August.

"The budget of the project will depend upon the capacity of NPS. It might range from $2,000 to 3,000 per 1 KW of electricity," he added.

Azerbaijan made a decision to construct a nuclear reactor on 24 August, Adil Garibov, the Director of the Institute of Radiation Problems of the National Academy of Sciences, said.

In March the Government received proposals on the construction of a Nuclear Power Station. These proposals recommended increasing the capacity of the NPS to 1,500 MW. They offered Navai Village in which to construct the NPS, the site which was planned even during the Soviet period.

Skryabin said that NPS should be built in a less populated area. Advanced technology has enabled NPS to be made safer for the population. "There should be a distance, but it is not worth it to build NPS too far because it must reach the network," the analyst explained.

The construction of the power station will take 3-4 years to complete.

The analyst said that the nuclear power is the energy of the future and it is worth thinking over the construction of nuclear reactors, taking into consideration that the oil and gas prices will hardly be lower than the current one. "Many countries, including Germany, which have negatively regarded nuclear power, are now reinstating debates on the possibility of constructing nuclear reactors," Skryabin said.
