Iranian wins 2010 Fair Play Award

The 2010 Act of Fair Play Award has been given jointly to three international athletes, including Iranian soccer player Amin Motevasselzadeh, Press TV reported.

Lithuanian decathlete Darius Draudvila and Chinese wrestler Gao Feng were also honored in a ceremony held by the International Fair Play Committee and the International Sports Journalists' Association (AIPS) in Lausanne, Switzerland on Thursday.

Motevasselzadeh kicked the ball out of play in an Iranian Premier League match when presented with an open goal, refusing to take advantage of the opposition goalkeeper lying injured.

Draudvila probably cost himself the chance of a medal at the European athletics championships when he lent his pole in the pole vault to eventual bronze medalist Belarusian Andrei Krauchanka, who had broken his and was unable to find another.

Gao carried an injured opponent from the arena to receive treatment at the Asian Games even though the rival had been sanctioned for biting him during the contest.

The International Committee for Fair Play was established in 1963 to draw the attention of the world to the outstanding examples of fair play attitude and good sportsmanship in sport.
