A spate of attacks has killed nine people in Iraq, mostly in capital Baghdad, against a backdrop of increasing violence in the city over the past days, Press TV reported.

At least five people, including three soldiers, were killed when a car bomb ripped through an army checkpoint in Ghazaliya district in western Baghdad, officials said.

Meanwhile, in a hit and run attack in the northern city of Mosul, gunmen opened fire on policemen killing two on the spot, AFP reported.

Another soldier was killed in Tel Afar, northwest of Baghdad, when unidentified assailants threw a hand grenade at a patrol, the military said.

A ninth person was killed in a bomb explosion in Baquba, the capital of Diyala province north of Baghdad, police said.

Violence in Baghdad has killed over 60 people over the past few days.
