British government survives vote on EU referendum call

The British government Wednesday survived a challenge by the Conservative opposition party to hold a referendum on the European Union Reform Treaty. ( dpa )

Prime Minister Gordon Brown's ruling Labour Party won a parliamentary vote on the issue with a comfortable majority of 63.

A handful of Labour members of parliament backed the Opposition motion, while most of the Liberal members of parliament abstained in line with the party whip.
