Atmosphere in Conflict Zone Far from Stable: Russian General Staff

Azerbaijan, Baku, 22 August / Trend corr. V.Javoronkova / The atmosphere in the conflict zone is far from stable. This was said by A.Nogovitsin, Deputy Chief of the Russian General Staff, said at the briefing in Moscow.

Nogovitsin said that peacemakers continue to carry out peacemaking tasks in the conflict zone, as well as to guard relevant premises and provide security to population.

At present, there are 2,142 peacemakers in the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict zone.

"Additional posts of peacemakers are settled in Abkhazia," Nogovitsin said.

Large-scale military operations commenced in the unrecognized South Ossetia republic in the early morning of 8 August. Georgian Army was reported to enter Tskhinvali on 9 August. On 12 August, the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev took a decision to stop military operations.
