Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin, who is on an official visit to Ashgabat, discussed aspects of energy security, a message from the government of Turkmenistan said on Nov.4.

During the meeting, Klimkin said that the peaceful policy pursued by the Turkmen president and important international initiatives, especially on ensuring the safety of transportation of energy resources put forward by him, is praised and fully supported in Ukraine and in the whole world.

The sides discussed the further development of cooperation between the two countries. They named the trade, economic, fuel and energy, transport and communications spheres as the promising areas of cooperation.

Ukrainian foreign minister said that the mutually beneficial economic relations are aimed at implementing new joint projects of national and regional importance.

Being one of the key actors in the energy market of Central Asia and Caspian Sea region, Turkmenistan puts forward a number of initiatives to ensure the reliable and stable supply of energy resources to the world market.

Currently, Turkmen gas has the access to the Ukrainian market only through Russian pipelines. Turkmenistan hasn't delivered fuel to Ukraine under the direct contract since 2006.

Earlier, Ukrainian side said that the two countries have all opportunities to combine efforts in order to create alternative routes for gas supply to meet the domestic demand and to export to Europe.

The national oil and gas company of Ukraine, 'Naftogaz of Ukraine' and Turkmengas company signed a memorandum on the supply of Turkmen gas to Ukraine on Feb.13 2013.
