Azerbaijan to ratify protocol on preventing Caspian Sea oil pollution

Azerbaijan will ratify the protocol on ‘Preparation of the region, response measures and cooperation in preventing oil pollution to the Framework Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea’, the Azerbaijani Parliament said on Saturday.

Azerbaijan will ratify the protocol on 'Preparation of the region, response measures and cooperation in preventing oil pollution to the Framework Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea', the Azerbaijani Parliament said on Saturday.

The bill was discussed at a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources, Energy and Environment and recommended for discussion at the plenary session of the Azerbaijani Parliament.

The purpose of this protocol, signed in Aktau on August 12, 2011, is the protection of the Caspian Sea, as well as the land from oil pollution.

The document reflects the readiness to threats of pollution, response measures and regional actions on joint cooperation in this field, chairman of the committee and Deputy Chairman of the Azerbaijani Parliament Valeh Alasgarov said at a meeting.

The protocol was signed by all five Caspian littoral countries. According to this document, the contracting parties will carry out all the necessary work to prevent oil pollution.

It was stressed that a plan for regional cooperation in resolving this problem will be prepared to fulfil the terms of the protocol.
