The session of the World Health Organization's (WHO) Regional Office for Europe in Baku will boost the development of medicine not only in Azerbaijan, but also in all WHO member countries, Azerbaijani Health Minister Ogtay Shiraliyev said at the opening of the session.

The Azerbaijani side proposed to hold the 61st session of the WHO Regional Office for Europe in Baku, and the WHO approved it, Shiraliyev said.
He said that such an important event in Baku should be considered as a great respect for Azerbaijan.

The session discusses health problems in the European region and will take relevant decisions, Shiraliyev said. All work done in this sphere will be regulated thanks to such discussions and decisions.

Decisions taken following the session will also concern Azerbaijan, he added.
The session participants are expected to get acquainted with the health care level in Azerbaijan, Shiraliyev said.

"A special introductory program has been developed for them. They will visit Azerbaijan's medical institutions and give their recommendations. All states are interested in the health care development in Azerbaijan, as well as in the work done in our country. We believe that during the session the guests will hold talks and extensive discussions in this regard. We will hear out their opinions," Shiraliyev underlined.

The 61st session of the WHO Regional Office for Europe has been kicked off in Baku today. About 350 representatives from 53 countries will be attending the session, including health ministers and representatives of other state agencies

The session at the national and regional level will focus on five vital issues - combating infectious diseases, tuberculosis, AIDS, alcoholism, and resistance to antibiotics and their use. The session will discuss the latest medical achievements and will take decision on them.

WHO Regional Director for Europe Zsuzsanna Jakab stressed the development of health care in Azerbaijan. It is necessary to intensify work on health care management and providing medical services, she stressed. Emphasizing necessity to seek new ways to solve health care problems, Jakab stressed cooperation with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, as well as with the World Bank.
