In January-April, 2009, Georgia's foreign trade turnover fell 34.9 percent compared to the same period in 2008 and amounted to $595 million. Moreover, exports decreased by 33 percent ($311.3 million), while imports - by 35.3 percent ($1,283.7 million).
The Georgian Economic Development Ministry Statistical Department reported that a negative trade balance also fell by 36 percent and amounted to $972.4 million. Trading operations were conducted with 92 countries. A positive balance of trade amounted to $56 million, which is recorded in trade with 19 countries.
The trade turnover of Georgia with the EU countries in January-April of this year decreased by 34.9 percent, amounting to $439.7 million, including export - $76.7 million, import - $363 million.
Foreign trade turnover with CIS countries decreased by 40.1 percent and amounted to $489.4 million (in exports accounted for $109.6 million, while imports - $379.8 million).
Largest trading partner of Georgia is Turkey, with which the foreign trade turnover amounted to $310.3 million, that only 4.3 percent less than the same period last year. Furthermore, exports decreased by 3.3 percent - to $62.8 million, import - on $11.8 million - up to $247.5 million.
Second place is occupied by Azerbaijan, with which the foreign trade turnover decreased by 34.9 percent, reaching $161.5 million, in third place - Ukraine (down 37.7 percent - $144.9 million).
