Apple growing in Iran will reach 4.5 million tons in the current Iranian year (from March 21, 2021, through March 20, 2022), Deputy Minister of Agriculture Jihad of Iran, Mohammad Mehdi Borumandi said, Trend reports citing IRNA.
He made the remark to the reporters after visiting the Meshkin Shahr apple orchards in the Ardabil Province (northwestern Iran).
According to Borumandi, while in the last Iranian year (from March 20, 2020, through March 20, 2021), 4.12 million tons of apples were grown in Iran.
The deputy minister added that 1.1 million tons of apples were exported to various countries over the last Iranian year, and Iran seeks to increase this figure in the current Iranian year through the efforts of trade attachés.
“The value of Iran's agricultural exports for the last Iranian year amounted to about $6 billion, of which $3.2 billion were horticultural products,” he said.
Borumandi noted that 450,000 tons of horticultural products are harvested annually in Iran's Ardabil Province, of which 300,000 tons are in the Meshkin Shahr County.
In addition, Ardabil Province plays a major role in Iran's food supply with more than 4 million tons of orchards, crops, and livestock, the deputy minister said.
