(autoinsidernews) - Audi is considering offering a diesel version of its forthcoming R8 sports car, according to Wolfgang Hatz, Audi's executive director of powertrain development. In the latest issue of Italy's Quattroruote magazine, Hatz said that Audi hopes to improve consumer perception of its diesels.

Hatz said that he would like to offer a diesel engine in the R8 sports car. But first, Audi must improve the refinement and noise levels of the diesel, and offer response like a gasoline engine, reports Trend.

Audi has already announced a diesel-powered Q7, featuring a production version of the V12 TDI engine used in the R10 race car, which would be an obvious choice with its 500-hp and 738 lb.-ft. of torque. The automaker has also said that the new TT coupe will also have a diesel option.
