The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) has not abandoned a project to build an oil refinery in the Turkish port of Ceyhan, SOCAR's senior representative said today.
"SOCAR has not abandoned a project to build an oil refinery in the Turkish port of Ceyhan, we consider it in the distant perspective," SOCAR's representative said.
He said at present, SOCAR is focused on another project - Petkim petrochemical complex.
"Now we intend to build a new oil refinery on the basis of Petkim. This project is much cheaper and it will operate on our raw materials," he said.
Earlier, several companies planed to build an oil-refining complex in Ceyhan. Thus, the Kazakh company planed to build a large oil refinery with capacity of 20 million tons per year in the Turkish port. However, this project was also postponed. In addition, a number of large Russian companies are interested in construction in Ceyhan.
Now oil is delivered to Ceyhan via the Baku - Tbilisi - Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline with designed capacity of 50 million tons per year. The Turkish Government plans to build another pipeline - Samsun - Ceyhan oil pipeline with designed capacity of 50 million tons per year on its territory. In addition, oil is delivered to Ceyhan via the Kirkuk-Ceyhan oil pipeline with the capacity of 70 million tons per year.
