BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 11. In general, 5,526 megawatt-hours will be added to Iran’s electricity generation capacity, during the current Iranian year (March 21, 2022 through March 20, 2023), said Mohsen Tarztalab, Managing Director of Iran’s Thermal Power Plants Holding Company (TPPH), Trend reports citing Iranian Energy Ministry.

Thus, the country’s electricity generation capacity will reach a record level, Tarztalab noted.

The director added that under the program, Iran will launch new power units for thermal power plants with a capacity to generate 3,686 megawatt-hours of electricity in the first 6 months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through September 22, 2022).

“Meanwhile, in the second half of the current Iranian year (September 23, 2022 through March 20, 2023), the power units with a capacity to generate 1,840 megawatt-hours of electricity will be launched in the country. This will be a record figure in the country for several decades,” he said.

According to Tarztalab, the power generation capacity of the country's thermal power plants exceeded 70,000 megawatt-hours last Iranian year. There are currently 589 power units operating at 129 thermal power plants in Iran.

The official emphasized that Iran's total power plants (thermal, hydroelectric, nuclear, renewable, and so on) generated a total of 359 million megawatt-hours of electricity over the last Iranian year. About 95 percent of this is accounted for by the country’s thermal power plants.

“Within last Iranian year, Iran launched new power units for thermal power plants with a capacity to generate a total of 1,570 megawatts of electricity,” he said.

The director also pointed out that about 358,000 spare parts needed in the electricity industry were produced domestically. In cooperation with universities, work is underway to produce 85 percent of necessary electrical equipment and spare parts domestically.
