BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 9. Senior Vice President, Chief Scientist of the International Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), Professor Steven Hamburg, highlighted the significance of Azerbaijan's methane initiatives, which will be presented at COP29 in November in Baku, the EDF Head said in an interview with Trend.

Hamburg highlighted that the forthcoming Declaration on Methane, which targets measures to curb emissions in the oil and gas sector, will be critically important.

"Equally important is Azerbaijan's initiative to reduce organic methane emissions from food waste, as it aims to ensure land cleanliness, not just atmospheric purity," he noted.

Regarding expectations for the 29th session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Hamburg stated that COP29 is expected to endorse the implementation of several global climate ambitions and ensure progress, particularly in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

"I believe there are real opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, especially in the oil and gas industry. Progress is achievable through technological advancements," Hamburg added.

He also mentioned that countries should optimize fossil fuel use in the fight against climate change, manage production processes more effectively, and minimize greenhouse gas emissions to meet the climate goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

To note, COP29 is set to take place in Baku from November 11-22, with around 60 documents on the table ready to be signed.
