Fujitsu's Latest Smartphone Has No GSM

( Mobile ) - Here's a strange one for you. While the Fujitsu FOMA F1100 slider smartphone looks reasonably conventional, there is one very important element that is missing from the package: cellular. Instead of opting for either CDMA or GSM, this smartphone is completely dedicated to IP telephony via its integrated 802.11a/b/g WiFi radio.

It's one of those strange but true kind of devices, because when you find yourself outside of a hotspot, this phone essentially becomes useless. You can still make use of the core applications found within the Windows Mobile 6 device, of course. They do note that the FOMA F1100 rocks HSDPA, so you could presumably make calls that way. I just find it interesting that they have 3G and WiFi, but not 2G or 2.5G.

Other features include a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, a 2.6-inch QVGA display, a microSD expansion slot, and a slide-out numeric keypad. Look for this WinMo smartphone to launch in Q1 2008.
