By Huseyn Valiyev – Trend:

Azerbaijan’s internet provider Avirtel plans to offer broadband over power lines (BPL) service, General Director of Avirtel Esmaeil Shabani told Trend.

According to Shabani, a number of issues have to be coordinated with the Ministry of Transport, Communications and High Technologies for the commercial launch.

“We offered this service to the ministry and waiting for an answer,” Shabani said.

The service was pilot tested in 2009. The company has purchased equipment required for the BPL service. Special modems are also required for the implementation of the technology.

The new technology doesn’t yield to conventional networks and has a number of advantages: low price of internet access, no need for a dedicated communications network and high speed of data transmission (up to 300 Mbps).

Avirtel planned to use the new internet access technology for IPTV and VoIP services, the company announced earlier.
