(dpa) - The 2006 champion Oscar Pereiro crashed in a descent during Sunday's Tour de France stage and is out of the famous race, with first medical reports speaking of a broken collarbone and femur.
The Caisse D'Epargne rider Pereiro crashed in the descent from the Col d'Agnel, the first mountain beyond category for the riders in the Alps.
The Tour website said that he never lost consciousness and was taken to hospital.
Pereiro finished second in the 2006 Tour, but was declared winner after the original champion Floyd Landis of the US was disqualified for a doping offence.
