Observers of PA OSCE to observe polls in Azerbaijan

Observers of the Parliamentary Assembly (PA) of the OSCE will arrive in Baku to monitor the re-run elections to Azerbaijani parliament to be held on 13 May 2006, MP Eldar Ibrahimov, the Azerbaijani parliamentary delegate at PA OSCE, told Trend .

An Azerbaijani delegation comprised of Vice Speaker Bahar Muradova, MPs Rabiyyat Aslanova, Eldar Ibrahimov, and Fattah Heydarov, participated in the 5th winter session of PA OSCE held in Vienna from 23 to 27 February. Following adoption of an agenda at a permanent commission of the organization, the issue on elections was put for discussions. After the hearings on the elections held in different member-counties of the organization, the chairman of the PA OSCE. Elsee Hastings said that the recent parliamentary elections through fell short of many OSCE requirements they contributed to progress. Hastings appreciated the conduct and result of the elections. He underlined that the OSCE observers will arrive in Baku to observe the re-run elections scheduled for 13 May.

Ibrahimov informed that the chairman of the PA OSCE also appreciated resolutions by President Ilham Aliyev on dismissal of the heads of the Executive Powers of some districts, who allowed violations during the elections. He attributed it as a manifestation of democracy.

The committee on economy of the organization also discussed the development of repots t be p[assed to the spring session. The Committee on human rights and democracy hosted discussions on gender issues and tolerance. During the meeting an Armenian delegate, Grigorian, touched upon an issue on an Azerbaijani officer, Ramil Safarov, an Azerbaijani arrested in Hungary. However, Bahar Muradova and Rabiyyat Aslanova succeeded to suppress with grounded fact, he underlined.

The MPs distributed 60 books dealing with the Khojaly genocide were distributed among the participants of the Assembly, of them 50 were provided by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. During the break an Armenian delegate came to me and asked for a book describing the bloody tragedy, Ibrahimov said.

The PA OSCE granted the Azerbaijani delegation with a mandate.
