Lebanon is a candidate for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council. This is in accordance to a contract between the members of the League of Arab States on the rotation of seats in the Security Council every two years, Lebanese Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Minister Fawzi Salloukh said, Emirate's news agency WAM reported.

The League of Arab States has supported Lebanon's application, Sallloukh said, expressing his hope for success.

Lebanon is expected to receive non-permanent membership for two years during the 64th UN General Assembly in September.

Algeria, which is a non-permanent member of the organization, represents Arab interests in the UN Security Council.

Lebanon - UN relations were reconciled following the placement of UNIFIL peacekeeping forces in the south of the country after the war between Israel and the Lebanese political party Hezbollah in 2006.
