Azerbaijan, Baku, Aug. 27 / Trend A.Huseynbala /
The Azerbaijani Press Council has received 20 complaints against the criminal activities of some publications.
"Every day we receive complaints against newspapers involved in criminal activity, both from Baku and various regions of the country," the Executive Secretary of the Press Council, Rahim Huseynzade, told Trend on Aug.27.
A while ago, the Press Council published a list of more than 80 newspapers engaged in criminal activity. The Council has appealed to the law enforcement authorities to investigate these allegations.
According to Huseynzade, the Council has received complaints from both the capital and various regions of the country. The appeals were handed over to the Press Council's Committee against Racketeering, which investigates and determines whether a newspaper is engaged in criminal activity.
The majority of the complaints had come from Baku's children's hospitals. There were also complaints against managers and employees of some newspapers, who cheated citizens by means of their employment, Huseynzade said.
A final decision on the publications' involvement in any criminal activity will be made only after a full investigation.
More than 3,300 media outlets have been registered in Azerbaijan. At present, only 600 of them are functioning. Nearly 400 newspapers and magazines are published and more than 20 television channels function. There are approximately 50 electronic media outlets and 20 news agencies in Azerbaijan; the rest are Internet resources.
