It is necessary to ensure women' participation in all spheres of the government to strengthen their role in society, Azerbaijani MP Gultekin Hajibeyli said at the conference on "Women in the local government" organized jointly with the OSCE Baku office.

"There is an objective approach to this problem today. If Azerbaijani women have not approved themselves at the level that they deserve, then it must be admitted," Hajibeyli said.

The problem is relevant in the 42 member countries of the Council of Europe, she said.

Hajibeyli belives an active and successful participation of women in the municipal elections of 2009 and will also be provided during the upcoming parliamentary elections.

OSCE Baku Office Head Ali Bilge Cankorel noted that a six-fold increase in the number of women in the local government is a new stage in the political life of Azerbaijan.

Cankorel expressed hope for active participation of women in the parliamentary elections.

Deputy Chairman of State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs Sadagat Gahramanova said wide possibilities for women's representation in the governmental structures and moving forward were opened with the adoption of the decree on the participation of women in political life in Azerbaijan in 2010.

Following the municipal elections held in December in 2009, 26 percent of seats in local government were occupied by women. The figure was only 4 percent in 2005.

The conference is organized jointly with the Public Association "Women-Leaders" and the Institute for Democracy Development. The meeting discussed ways and means of involving women in political decision-making.
