BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 15. Azerbaijan pledges continued support for UNESCO’s global priorities and Africa’s development, said Elman Abdullayev, Azerbaijan’s Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Trend reports.

During the 220th session of the UNESCO Executive Board, he underscored Azerbaijan’s dedication to UNESCO’s global priorities, particularly gender equality and the advancement of Africa. Abdullayev highlighted Azerbaijan's long-standing commitment to fostering unity, dialogue, and mutual understanding in the face of growing global challenges.

"Azerbaijan firmly believes in the power of dialogue, collaboration, and respect among different cultures and religions, rooted in our centuries-long tradition of multiculturalism," Abdullayev said. He emphasized Azerbaijan’s focus on promoting a culture of peace and encouraging intercultural dialogue worldwide through initiatives such as the Baku Process and Peaceful Culture Initiatives, which are undertaken in cooperation with UNESCO and other Member States.

Azerbaijan has played an active role in supporting UNESCO's mission globally, particularly through the Azerbaijan UNESCO Trust Fund, which has contributed to priority areas in different regions. Abdullayev noted Azerbaijan’s strong advocacy for the Priority Africa Initiative and its commitment to preserving Africa’s cultural and natural heritage, citing the country’s consistent support for the Africa World Heritage Fund.

Last month, the Government of Azerbaijan contributed an additional $100,000 to the fund, reinforcing its commitment to Africa’s development. He further noted Azerbaijan’s dedication to capacity-building initiatives, particularly through its National Commission, which has organized training programs for representatives from over 20 African countries. These efforts were further bolstered by Azerbaijan’s support for the Regional Meetings of African National Commissions for UNESCO in Ghana and Angola.

Azerbaijan also expressed its support for universal access to STEM education, with Abdullayev commending UNESCO’s contributions to STEM training in Africa. "We recognize the transformative potential of STEM education in driving economic growth, social progress, and sustainable development, particularly in addressing Africa’s unique challenges," he said. Azerbaijan is eager to continue supporting enhanced STEM training initiatives across Africa in the coming years.

The ambassador concluded by reaffirming Azerbaijan's commitment to working closely with UNESCO and other Member States to advance these vital initiatives and strengthen global cooperation.
