Iran lead output rose 7.9 per cent

Iran has produced 20,400 tons of lead in a 12-month period to end February 10.

The amount shows a 7.9 per cent increase compared to the same time last year, the Mehr News Agency reported.

Iran's lead output stood at 18,900 tons in the 12-month period which ended February 10, 2012.

Iran produced 110,600 tons of lead and zinc during the first eight months of the current Iranian calendar year which began on March 20, showing a nine per cent rise compared to the same period last year.

The total output of zinc and lead amounted to 17,300 tons in the eighth calendar month, the IRNA News Agency reported.

Deputy Head of Iran's Geology and Mineral Exploration Organisation Behrouz Borna said in August that Iran holds three per cent of the world's mineral reserves putting the country first in the Middle East and third in Asia.

Iran is ranked among the 15 major mineral-rich countries of the world and exports its industrial and mineral products to 159 countries, including Iraq, China, the United Arab Emirates, India and Afghanistan.

The important mines of Iran include coal, metallic minerals, sand and gravel, chemical minerals and salt. Iran has the world's largest zinc and second largest copper deposits and ranks ninth for its iron reserves.
