Turkmenistan plans to collect over 1M tons of cotton

The cotton picking process began in the Turkmen fields of Akhal, Lebap and Mary regions. A harvest season will begin in the northern region of the country - Dashoguz region on Sept. 7, Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported Sept. 1.

It is planned to store up 1.5 million tons of raw cotton: including the Akhal region - 207,000 tons, Dashoguz - 230,000 tons, Lebap - 300,000 tons, and Mary - 313,000 tons in the current campaign.

The total area of land allocated for cotton is 545,000 hectares. Around 156 centers and 36 ginning factories of the country will receive the new cotton crop.

Cotton is mainly exported in the country. It is the raw material for dozens of modern enterprises of the dynamically developing textile industry in Turkmenistan, Turkmen Dovlet Khabarlary (TDH) reported. Cotton growers exceeded their contractual obligations in 2013 by providing the country with about 1.2 million tons of raw cotton.

TDC draws attention to the fact that local cotton growers obtained an opportunity to sell cotton fiber, lint, gin motes, obtained as a result of the industrial processing of raw cotton in excess of the state order, abroad through the Turkmen State Commodity and Raw Materials Exchange.

The fourth international exhibition-fair of Turkmenistan's cotton is planned to be held in Ashgabat in November 2014. The main objective of the forum is the presentation of the export potential of the area.
