In total, 4,500 kg of gold was produced in the Kurdistan Province (western Iran) in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2019 to March 20, 2020), Chairman of Industry, Mine and Trade Organization of Kurdistan Province Mohammad Daravazmi said, Trend reports citing the organization’s website.
The chairman stressed that this means more than 50 percent of the gold produced in Iran.
Daravazmi added that 1,200 people are employed at the Zarkuh gold mine in Kurdistan Province.
"The mine paid 500 billion rials (about $11.9 million) worth of tax in the last Iranian year," he said.
The Zarkuh gold mine in Iran's Kurdistan Province has 4.5 million tons of gold reserves and currently it is possible to extract 18 tons of gold from this mine.
Iran's West Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, Razavi Khorasan, South Khorasan, Qom, Sistan and Baluchestan, Zanjan and Markazi are the provinces where gold mines are located.
