BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 20
By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:
Georgia has returned to third place in the international hazelnut market, said Merab Chitanava, chairman of the board of the Association of hazelnut producers, Trend reports via Georgian media.
He also said that the association continues to work to increase the yield of hazelnuts.
“Further plans are to increase exports to 100,000 tons of hazelnuts from Georgia by 2023-2024, which will bring the country closer to second place,” Chitanava said.
At present, Italy is the second-largest exporter of hazelnuts with a production volume of 130,000 tonnes of high-quality hazelnuts.
The export of Georgian products without re-export increased by 2.8 percent in 9 months of this year. Hazelnut sales have increased the most in 9 months of 2020. Georgia earned $37.6 million this year by exporting 7,007 tons of hazelnuts. Despite the pandemic, the export of these products from Georgia increased by 60.3 percent.
The increase in demand for Georgian hazelnuts in the Hazelnut Association is associated with improved product quality.
