By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

More gas from the Southern Gas Corridor can make Europe less fragile, member of the board of the Italian Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and Environment (ARERA), Stefano Saglia said, Trend reports via Italian media.

The current gas crunch in Europe clearly shows that the construction of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), the European leg of the Southern Gas Corridor, which supplies Azerbaijani gas to Europe, was a right choice, he said.

Saglia noted that TAP is set to deliver around 8 billion cubic meters of gas to Italy per year, thereby providing an alternative to other gas suppliers.

“More gas deliveries via the Southern Gas Corridor can improve price competitiveness in Europe and turn Italy into a gas hub,” he added.

TAP has to date transported 5 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe. TAP’s total capacity is 10 billion cubic meters with possibility of expansion to 20 billion cubic meters per year. TAP is designed to supply 8 billion cubic meters of gas to Italy and 1 billion cubic meters to Greece and Bulgaria each. The International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasts that the pipeline will reach its full capacity in the next two years.
