BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 8. Energy crisis should also be addressed with demand side solutions, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Fatih Birol said at IEA’s 7th Annual Global Conference on Energy Efficiency, Trend reports.

“When I look at today’s international policy making, the overwhelming of the solutions are on the supply side. Of course, this is part of the solution, we’ve looked at these options. But there is not enough emphasis on the demand side solutions – energy efficiency. This is very important. As much as we look at the supply side solutions to find in the short-term a replacement to the missing oil and gas important for the economy, we have to see how we can reduce the demand. It is a reason why the International Energy Agency is very keen to support governments here,” said Birol.

He pointed out that three important drivers come together at the same time for energy efficiency that the world has never seen in the last 50 years: economic drivers, climate commitments and national energy security factors.

“These three coming together is a very powerful combination. I am very hopeful that we will see energy efficiency will be now among measures to be taken by governments to address this crisis. IEA will accelerate work on energy efficiency, because it is not only about addressing about climate challenges, but energy security and reducing the bill of consumers,” added IEA’s executive director.
