Georgia, Tbilisi, July 26 / Trend N. Kirtskhalia /

Georgia and Azerbaijan plan to cooperate in the telecommunications sector. Adviser to Georgian Prime Minister Vakhtang Lezhava said this morning that Georgia and Azerbaijan will soon begin to work on the "East-West" transnational information superhighway.

"This concerns laying a fiber-optic network from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea," Lezhava told media.

The cost of the project has yet to be determined.

A resolution on the information superhighway was proposed by Azerbaijan and adopted by the U.N. The project aims to eliminate the "informational gap" between the East and West, to reduce poverty, to increase economic growth and to play the role of a regional development engine.

The project will connect 20 countries.
