By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

According to the Roads Department of Georgia, construction of a 51-kilometer road connecting Zemo Imereti-Racha is underway, Trend reports via Georgian media.

The route starts from Sachkhere and passes through the Sareki, Kvemo Khevi, Uzunta, Shkmeri, Bokva, Kvashkhieti, Zudali villages, and finally joins with the Ambrolauri-Oni road, which is 20 km away from Ambrolauri and 5 km from Oni.

The road connecting Zemo Imereti-Racha is crucial from the socio-economic point of view.

The travel time on the 111-kilometer long Sachkhere-Oni route is approximately two hours now. The new Imereti-Racha highway reduces the Sachkhere-Oni travel time by at least one hour.

Minister for regional development and infrastructure Maia Tskitishvili said new highways and renovated internal roads will bring Georgia closer to the European Union and its trade partners, create more opportunities to attract tourists in the region, and simplify launching different economic activities here.

A tender for the construction of the Tbilisi-Sagarejo highway will open next year. Building the road falls within both countries' interests, as it is beneficial for the Azerbaijani-Georgia transit corridor. This road is of international significance, as, in addition to being the main road of Tbilisi and Kakheti, it functions as a transit corridor between the northern and western regions of Georgia and Azerbaijan.
