By Fidan Babayeva - Trend:

Cargo transportation volume by railway is expected to be increased after the completion of the construction of the railway between Iran’s Rasht city and Azerbaijan’s Astara city, Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev said.

Mustafayev made the remark at the 24th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Trend reports on June 4.

“Several international transit corridors pass through the Azerbaijani territory,” the deputy prime minister added.

"One of the international transit corridors - North-South International Transport Corridor passes through Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran and reaches Southwest Asia,” Mustafayev added. “Azerbaijan is doing a lot to develop and promote this corridor.”

“A new road bridge on the border with Russia and a railway bridge on the border with Iran have been recently opened,” the deputy prime minister said.

“We cooperate with Iran and Russia to advance this corridor,” Mustafayev said. “I would like to say that despite the situation, we have not suspended transit cargo transportation through our countries (Iran-Azerbaijan-Russia) for a single day.”

“Transit cargo transportation through Azerbaijan increased by 19 percent in 2020 compared to the previous year,” the deputy prime minister said.

"The railway between Rasht and Astara cities is connected in the south with Chabahar port and it will be possible to send cargoes from India, countries of Southwest Asia to the north and in the opposite direction through it," Mustafayev said.
