BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 13. The volume of cargo transported through the Northwest Regional Railway, which links several provinces of Iran by rail, increased by 12 percent during the six months of the current Iranian year (from March 20 through September 21, 2023) compared to the same period last year (from March 21 through September 22, 2023), the Director General of Iran's Northwest Regional Railways Authority Manouchehr Safari told reporters, Trend reports.
According to him, 177 million tons of cargo were transported along the North-Western Railway during the six months. However, the figure was 158 million ton kilometers in the same period last year.
He added that during the six months, mainly iron ore concentrate, grain and animal feed, fuel oil, zinc ingots, sulfur, and many others were transported via the North Western Railway.
The official noted that the volume of cargo loaded in the North-Western Railway Department for six months amounted to 160,000 tons. This is 75,000 tons more than in the same period last year.
Safari noted that the Northwest Railway is mainly used for local and foreign transit.
To note, the Northwest Regional Authority of Iranian Railways controls Iran's Qazvin, Zanjan, East Azerbaijan, and West Azerbaijan railroads. The total length of the railroad managed by this authority is 601 kilometers.
