Tbilisi is hosting a conference today dedicated to the problems of mountainous regions.
The organizers of the conference are the Demographic Revival Fund, the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure and the Parliamentary Committee on Regional Policy and Self-government.
The main topics of discussion are the economic situation in the mountainous regions and demographic problems.
Some 164 villages in Georgia have been completely emptied and no more than ten families live in around 152 villages.
The majority of them are mountainous villages. The hardest situation is observed in border areas which have almost been completely emptied.
A single document will be worked out at the conference which will be submitted to the parliament as a draft law.
Government and parliament members are participating at the conference. Chairman of the Demographic Revival Fund Levan Vasadze will make a speech at the conference.
