Baku. Azerbaijan. August 9. An Iranian-backed Shiite group launched three missiles on Monday at the Ain al-Asad airbase in Iraq, where US troops were stationed, and one missile was intercepted, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said at a regular briefing for journalists, Trend reports with reference to TASS.
Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh noted that five servicemen were injured in the attack
"Two missiles, which we believe were fired by an Iranian-backed Shiite group, fell on the Ain al-Asad airbase in Iraq. The third missile was intercepted before it could reach the base," she said.
According to the official representative of the military department, the US Central Command (CENTCOM), whose operational area of responsibility primarily includes the Middle East and North Africa, is investigating the circumstances of the attack. "We want to make sure that this doesn't happen again, and so CENTCOM is going to adjust and take the appropriate actions necessary to protect our forces in the region," Singh said.
Initially, she continued, the Pentagon estimated that "seven people were injured." "In fact, five service members were injured in the attack. After post-strike analysis, we determined that four service members and one contractor were actually injured in the attack. The other two sustained minor injuries and immediately returned to duty," the spokeswoman explained.
