At least eight people, including six children, drowned when a ferry capsized in a river in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh, police said Thursday.

The boat capsized Wednesday night in the Saryu River in the Bahraich district, 250 kilometres north-east of the state capital, Lucknow, dpa reported.

"Two women and six children drowned in the river," Bahraich police chief Rajesh Modak said by telephone. "Ten others either swam to safety or were rescued."

Modak said the ferry, which had the capacity to carry 10 people, was overcrowded.

A week ago, 10 children drowned in a similar accident on the Tons River in Uttar Pradesh.
