Two quakes hit New Zealand's South Island

Two earthquakes hit New Zealand South Island's West Coast region on Sunday morning, causing no casualties or damages so far, Xinhua reported.

The quakes, in the Lord Howe Rise region about 100 km northwest of Ross, both happened at 6:32 a.m. (18:32 GMT Saturday), New Zealand's Institute of Geological and Nuclear Science said.

The first, at a magnitude of 5.0, struck at a depth of 12 km, and the second, a 4.8 magnitude, at a depth of 90 km.

GNS Science said the earthquakes were possibly felt throughout the South Island.
