In his letter to Turkmen President Gurbanguli Berdimuhammedov, U.S. President Barack Obama offered his Turkmen counterpart to take joint action to promote international security .
"I am sure that we will be able to work together to promote international security in the spirit of peace and friendship. I hope to work with you both in this direction and also to develop constructive relations between our two countries," Obama wrote in his letter.
Turkmenistan takes a neutral position in its foreign policy and borders Afghanistan and Iran.
Obama expressed his gratitude for Berdimuhammedov's congratulatory message on his election.
The U.S. backs the Nabucco project which is scheduled to deliver energy resources from the Caspian region - specifically natural gas from Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan to Europe bypassing Russia.
