Turkey must make clear the issue of Turkish President Abdullah Gul's sending his congratulations to his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan, deputy head of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration, head of the foreign relations department Novruz Mammadov said on Thursday.
"I have learned from the press that Turkish President Abdullah Gul allegedly sent the congratulation," he said. "I do not have the exact information, as I must examine this issue, because Turkey and Armenia have no diplomatic relations. In general, Serzh Sargsyan received one or two greetings. Even if there was such a greeting, it is Turkey's and Abdullah Gul's position and this must be made clear."
Earlier, Turkish President Abdullah Gul has congratulated Serzh Sargsyan on his re-election as the Armenian President.
Turkey and Armenia have no diplomatic relations and the border between the countries has been closed since 1993. This was caused by Armenian claims for international recognition of the so-called "genocide" and occupation of Azerbaijani territories.
Presidential elections were held in Armenia on Feb.18. Incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan won the presidential elections gaining 58.64 percent of the overall votes.
The First Foreign Minister of Armenia Raffi Hovannisian ranked second winning 36.75 percent, while former Prime Minister Hrant Bagratyan ranked third after receiving 2.15 percent of the vote.
