BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 15. Azerbaijan's economically active population numbers 5.3 million people, according to preliminary data as of October 1, 2024.
Data obtained by Trend from the country's State Statistics Committee indicates that this figure includes 5 million employed people.
The total number of hired workers as of February 1 this year amounted to over 1.75 million people, including 878,300 in the public sector of the economy and 876,600 in the private sector.
The oil and gas sector of the economy employed 31,700 people, while the non-oil and gas sector employed 1.72 million people.
A total of 23 percent of hired workers in enterprises and organizations are employed in the production sector, including 7.4 percent in manufacturing, 6.9 percent in construction, 3.3 percent in agriculture, forestry, and fishing, 1.9 percent in water supply, sanitation, and waste management, and 1.9 percent in mining, and 1.6 percent in electricity production, distribution, and supply of gas and steam.

Of the employed population, 18.9 percent are in the trade and motor vehicle repair sectors, 18.2 percent work in the education sector, 8.3 percent - the healthcare and social services sector, 6.4 percent - public administration and defense, and the social security sector, 4.7 percent - administrative and support services, 4.3 percent - transportation and warehousing, 3.8 percent - professional, scientific, and technical activities, 3.1 percent - leisure, entertainment, and arts, 3 percent - accommodation and food service activities, 2.2 percent - financial and insurance activities, 1.9 percent - information and communication, 1.1 percent - real estate operations, and 1.1 percent - other service sectors.
The average monthly hours worked per employee from January through August this year was 145.8 hours.
As of October 1, there were 216,400 registered unemployed individuals with the local branches of the State Employment Agency, 46.9 percent of whom were women. The average monthly unemployment insurance payment was 407.9 manat ($239.8).
