Ashgabat is hosting a meeting of the "Special Coordination Intergovernmental Group" today to discuss the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan railway project, the Turkmen government said on Friday.

The meeting composed of senior representatives of the three countries is being held within a memorandum of understanding signed in Ashgabat on March 20 following a meeting of the Turkmen, Afghan and Tajik presidents.

The organizational issues related to the practical implementation of the project are being examined during this meeting

Currently, the three countries are increasing their trade cooperation volume.

"The new railway, which will connect the neighboring countries in the third millennium, aims to ensure further integration on the basis of equal partnership and mutual economic benefits not only for participating countries, but for the region as a whole," Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper said today.

According to Turkmen officials, the project will be effective in restoring the social and economic infrastructure of neighboring Afghanistan and the sustained growth of its economy.

Moreover, the implementation of this project will contribute to diversifying the Turkmen and Tajik transport corridors, as well as using the transport and communication network of the Central Asian, Caspian and Black Sea regions.

Tajikistan is experiencing a shortage of energy resources. Turkmenistan is one of the largest suppliers in Central Asia. Dushanbe is interested in increasing the supply of oil products to the country.
