More than 28,000 hectares of agricultural land in the Lorestan Province (western Iran) have been equipped with modern irrigation system over the past seven years (the current government came to power in Iran in August 2013), an official of the Lorestan Province Agriculture Department Bahman Feredooni told IRNA, Trend reports.

According to Feredooni, a total of 56,600 hectares of land in Lorestan Province have been equipped with modern irrigation systems.

He added that more than 4,000 hectares of land in Lorestan Province was equipped with a modern irrigation system in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2019, to March 20, 2020).

"At present, work is underway to equip 6,800 hectares of additional land in the province with modern irrigation system," he said.

The official stressed that an average of 26 percent of agricultural land in Iran and 30 percent in Lorestan Province are equipped with modern irrigation systems.

Feredooni noted that the government spent 104 million rials (about $2,476) per hectare for rainwater irrigation and 170 million rials (about $4,047) per hectare for drip irrigation in Lorestan Province in the last year.

Iran's Lorestan Province has about 800,000 hectares of agricultural land of which 23 percent is ordinary agricultural land, and the rest is dry-farming land.

Iran's Lorestan Province produces 3 million tons of agricultural goods worth about 70 trillion rials (about $1.6 billion) a year.
