SOCAR to build new gas pipelines

Oil&Gas Materials 4 August 2009 13:07 (UTC +04:00)

The Azerbaijani Scientific Research and Designing Institute of Gas (ASRPIG) plans to complete designing the two new gas pipelines, ASRPIG Head Azar Seyidov said on Aug.4. Gas pipelines are designed upon Aztransgaz's order

"Few details remained within this project. These details are planned to complete by late August," Seyidov said.

The institute launched preparations for construction, Seyidov added.

The design work cover construction of two gas pipelines, including one from the Sangachal terminal to the Gazimagomed gas storage (which is a gas hub of the country) and the second (a gas-tap) to the underground storage Kalmaz.

Azerigas PA (formerly Azerigas closed joint stock company) of the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) has Sangachal headwork (SH) not far from the Sangachal terminal. This facility receives gas which Azerbaijan holds as a part of the Shah Deniz offshore gas field and the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli offshore oil and gas fields.

An additional pipeline would be laid to ensure uninterrupted and safe gas transportation from the SH to the Kazimagomed compressor station, the country's natural gas hub distributing "blue fuel" to all regions, Seyidov said. Under the project, length of the new pipeline is 47 kilometers and diameter is 1,020 millimeter at a pressure of 55 atmospheres.

Similar gas pipeline was put into exploitation in 2008. Its length is 47 kilometers and diameter 1,220 millimeter at a design pressure of 55 atmospheres. Before, gas was delivered through outdated pipelines, which are unable to work under high pressure.

Institute also designed a project of an additional pipeline with the length 20.2 kilometers and a diameter 720 millimeters with a design pressure of 55 atmospheres to supply gas to Kalmaz storage. This pipeline will run from the 47th kilometer of the crane platform between the Garadagh and Kazimagom to Kalmaz underground gas storage facilities, Seyidov said.

There are two underground gas storages in Azerbaijan, including Garadagh gas storage with a 500 million cubic meters active capacity and Kalmaz with a 1.1 billion cubic meters active capacity.

At present, SOCAR conducts work as a part of the first phase to increase the active capacity of Garadagh gas storage. Reconstruction of gas storage envisages two phases. The first phase is targets increasing its active capacity to 1.4 billion cubic meters and the second phase expanding its active capacity to 2.3 billion cubic meters.
