SOCAR to reconstruct equipment at major gas facility

The Sate Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) plans to reconstruct one of the compressor stations at the Kalmaz underground gas storage facility, a source in oil and gas market said today.

At present, there are two underground gas-holders, including Karadag and Kalmaz ones.

He said there are two compressor stations at this facility, one of which consists of 13 components, and the second - five.

"The work on reconstruction is already in the agenda. But the work will be implemented at the end of the gas pumping season," the source said.

According to forecasts, the process of gas pumping into gas storage facilities should be completed Nov.5. However, according to the source, the process may delay until Nov.15. The amount of gas in underground gas storage facilities can reach three billion cubic meters.

In 2010, the amount of gas reserves in underground facilities in Azerbaijan will amount to three billion cubic meters. Last year this figure was at about two billion cubic meters compared to 1.4 billion cubic meters in 2008.

According to SOCAR, 507.7 million cubic meters of gas were pumped last year into Karadag underground gas storage facility, and in Kalmaz - 794.9 million cubic meters.
