BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 5
By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:
Azerbaijan plans to transport hydrogen to Europe through the Southern Gas Corridor, Trend quoted director general of SOCAR Rus trading company Farid Jafarov as saying.
He noted that reducing carbon emissions is unavoidable process not only for oil and gas companies, but also for the global economy.
“SOCAR group companies are already implementing a number of projects in this sphere. One of them is related to hydrogen production in Absheron to transport it to Europe via the Southern Gas Corridor in the future. It is about the net zero petroleum gas flaring until 2022,” he said.
Jafarov noted that the company is considering various projects, including the production of ammonium from associated petroleum gas with the capture and injection of carbon emissions back into the formation to maintain reservoir pressure. “We also consider transportation of this ammonium to Europe for the further production of hydrogen.”
The Southern Gas Corridor, which is comprised of Shah Deniz 2, the South Caucasus Pipeline Expansion, the Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP), and the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) became fully operational on December 31, 2020.
Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) AG confirmed on Dec. 31 the commencement of gas flows from Azerbaijan. The first gas has reached Greece and Bulgaria, via the Nea Mesimvria interconnection point with DESFA, as well as Italy, via the Melendugno interconnection point with SNAM Rete Gas (SRG).
