BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 7. As many as 41 cities and 5,297 villages in Iran were supplied with gas during the past two years (August 2021 through August 2023), Iranian Deputy Oil Minister and CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Majid Chegeni said at a press conference in Tehran on August 7, Trend reports.

According to him, in total, 1,253 cities and 39,699 villages have been supplied with gas in the country so far.

"Currently, 98.6 percent of the urban population and 86.3 percent of the rural population are equipped with gas," Chegeni added.

The deputy minister noted that in the past 2 years, 386 trillion rials (about $9.19 billion) have been spent on gas supply in cities and villages.

"Meanwhile, in the current Iranian year (March 21, 2023 through March 19, 2024), it is planned to spend 345 trillion rials (about $8.21 billion) on gas supply in the country," the official said.

Iran stands second in the world for gas reserves, with about 34 trillion cubic meters of gas. Reportedly, Iran's gas production capacity is more than 1 billion cubic meters. Iran exports only a small portion of the gas produced in the country, about 6 percent.
