Kazakhstan to increase share of renewable energy in total output

BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 17. Kazakhstan will commission several renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 1,700 MW by 2026 in Almaty, Kyzylorda, Turkestan, and Ulytau regions, Roman Sklyar, Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, said, Trend reports, citing Kazakh media.

Deputy Prime Minister said that 12 renewable energy projects were commissioned in 2022. Their overall capacity equals 385 MW. He also noted that by the end of the year, around 5 percent of the total energy will be generated as a result of the implementation of additional 15 projects with an output of 276 MW.

He noted that in addition to the above-mentioned projects, the Kazakh government will also modernize existing power plants with an overall output of 1,300 MW. Investment agreements have already commenced for this purpose.

Sklyar added that the Roadmap for the construction of the Ekibastuz Thermal Power Plant-3, which will include modern technological solutions, is completed. Meanwhile, the government also implements the construction of additional power units at the Ekibastuz Thermal Power Plant-2.

The development of renewable energy sources became an important element of the Kazakh national energy strategy due to the government’s plan to reach carbon neutrality by 2060. To achieve this objective, Kazakhstan established cooperation with some of the big names in the industry, including Masdar.
