Industrial production in Tajikistan's Sughd region increases

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, January 15. The value of industrial production in Tajikistan's Sughd region, reached 26.51 billion somoni ($2.423 billion) in 2023, Deputy Chairman of the Sughd region Anvar Yakubi, said, Trend reports.

He noted that the figure increased by 2.9 billion somoni ($265 million) or 10.7 percent compared to 2022. Yakubi emphasized the special focus on producing goods that replace imports during the reporting period.

According to him, the industrial enterprises of the region produced 1.3 million tons of cement and 1.4 million tons of coal in 2023.

He mentioned that the GDP of the Sughd region hit 35.2 billion somoni ($3.2 billion) in 2023, with a growth rate of 8.3 percent.

The Sughd region currently hosts 1,100 small and medium-sized industrial enterprises. In 2023, surpassing the initial plan of 150 new establishments, 269 new workshops and businesses were established, generating 2,455 job opportunities.

Tajikistan's industrial production increased by 8.9 percent year-on-year from January through October 2023. During this time, total industrial goods production reached 37.059 billion somoni ($3.4 billion).

The key drivers of this expansion were 5.4 percent increases in extractive sectors, 12.8 percent increases in manufacturing, and 10.4 percent increases in electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply.

Tajikistan is now implementing a rapid industrialization strategy for 2022-2026. In January 2022, President Rahmon named this period the 'Years of Industrial Development,' with ambitious intentions to raise industrial output by 2.5 times in five years. The target for 2026 is 95 billion somoni ($9.3 billion), up from 38.8 billion somoni ($3.7 billion) in 2021.
