President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has instructed to speed up cotton harvesting, the country’s government said in a message.

This issue was being discussed at a regular teleconference meeting.

“Having noted the need to complete harvesting of the remaining crop in a timely manner, the Turkmen president ordered to ensure the rational and efficient use of agricultural machinery and accelerate the work in the areas of land where the volume of harvested cotton is lower than the scheduled one,” the message said.

In late October 2016 it was reported that more than 1.50 million tons of raw cotton were collected in Turkmenistan from the total of 545,000 hectares of land allotted for cotton.

Cotton is the main raw material for the textile industry of Turkmenistan. Moreover, it is an important export product.

The country supplies cotton to China, Russia, the UK, South Korea, Turkey, Iran, Indonesia, Singapore, Ukraine and the Baltic countries.

Cotton products are sold through auctions in Turkmenistan’s commodity and raw materials exchange.
