NATO ambassadors will have an extraordinary meeting on Friday to discuss ending military operations in Libya, diplomats from the alliance told dpa on Thursday.
The meeting - due to start at 1300 GMT in Brussels - was called after reports that ousted Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi had been killed and news that fighters loyal to the National Transitional Council (NTC) had captured his last stronghold in Sirte.
NATO, acting under a United Nations mandate, intervened in Libya on March 31 to prevent attacks on civilians.
But its air raids on pro-Gaddafi troops, as well as the enforcement of a no-fly zone and a naval embargo, have paved the way for the advance and eventual victory of pro-NTC forces.
