The next summit of the EU and Russia will be held on May 21-22, Czech ambassador to Russia Miroslav Kostelka confirmed to CTK today, adding that the venue would be selected by the Russian hosts.

Kazan, Omsk or Irkutsk have been suggested, but Russians may eventually choose a different place.

Previous EU-Russia summits were held in Samara and, most recently, in Khanty-Mansiysk in Siberia.

The last summit was held in Nice in France last November. Now it is Russia's turn.

The Czech Republic is now holding the six-month rotating EU presidency. It is not yet clear whether it will be represented at the summit by Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek or President Vaclav Klaus.

Topolanek was recently in Moscow where he tried to settle the Russian-Ukrainian gas supplies dispute.

In Nice, Russia and the EU agreed on the renewal of the talks on the next strategic agreement, frozen after the Russian-Georgian conflict over South Ossetia last August.

The talks are expected to be complex and protracted.

Energy, trade, definition of joint values as well as observance of human rights are expected to be the main bones of contention.
